Alfie Ward
Alfie was born on the 25th May 2002, he weighed 7lb 12.5oz, and was perfect in every way. Our first child, Alfie was all he was supposed to be, the centre of our universe, the focus of my day. Alfie reached all his milestones and surpassed everything that was expected of him, but then one day, our world fell in, Alfie wasn't well... something simple we assumed... but no, Alfie at the tender age of just 3 years old was diagnosed with Ganglioneuroblastoma. The lump was declared benign, however, doctors kept an eye on it through routine MRI scans.
Whilst dealing with the diagnosis of ganglioneuroblastoma, Alfie's cheeky personality began to shine through. Alfie was still a little boy just like any other, and he developed a love for football, especially Chelsea. Life carried on. However during a routine scan doctors found a lump in his tummy, and in January 2008 Alfie was diagnosed with an aggressive and high risk type of Cancer, Neuroblastoma. With Alfie due to become a big brother in May we feared the worst...that he would never meet his younger brother.
Alfie began to miss school as his days and weeks were filled with surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and more. Despite all this Alfie remained a happy little boy who always had a smile on his beautiful face, even when he was sicker than you can imagine. And in the times in between, Alfie made the most of every minute. His school work and academic development never faltered. Alfie was by now a big brother to Bailey, and he relished his role as a loving, protective big brother.
Finally, Alfie began the road to recovery. The day came when we were told that Alfie had reached remission! He went back to school and loved being back amongst his many friends and continued to develop into a handsome, wonderful little boy. In 2010, Alfie's youngest brother Freddie completed our family.
Routine scans came and went until, in December 2011, the doctors found a thickening around his spine and kidneys. With surgery to that area too risky, Alfie needed to start intense chemotherapy once more.
We are now at the stage where options in the UK are coming to an end and Alfie may need treatment that is only available abroad. We have seen other families in this situation and lived in fear that one day we would also have to raise huge sums of money. Now it's our turn. We have to get Alfie whatever he needs, and with your help we can achieve our target in time. Please donate what you can and ask your friends to do the same. Please help us give Alfie the chance to beat this once and for all and give him the life he deserves.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Alfie's mum and dad
